Dear Joy, Dear Grief: From the Places Where We Meet

Call for Community Contributions

Five women standing and kneeling on a sidewalk in front of a building with a water tower in the background. The women are dressed in vintage clothing.

Our histories rarely carry only one feeling.

A photograph, object, place, sound, smell, or memory can hold multiple feelings at the same time.

It can remind us of what brought us here,

what sustains us,

what has caused pain,

and what continues to give us joy.

The theme “Dear Joy, Dear Grief” speaks to these complex and overlapping feelings within Filipino American life.

AN INVITATION

Filipino American History Month

at Sacramento State University

With your permission, selected items may become part of a Filipino American History Month community display at Sacramento State. We will contact you beforehand if your contribution is selected.

Our goal with these contributions is to recognize the many ways Filipino American life is remembered, experienced, and created throughout the Sacramento region. A display to index our lives, chart our memories, and remember our joy and our grief.

“Dear Joy, Dear Grief” is about our shared stories.

Please contact csus.fssi@gmail.com for more information.

Who can participate?

We welcome contributions from everyone.

We invite families, workers, educators, artists, elders, youth, community storytellers, and keepers of local history.

You do not need to be a Sacramento State student or employee to participate!
